Can You Recover From IBS?

There are those who believe that there are ways to control and slow down your digestive tract which could help those who suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). However, this is not a proven theory and could potentially cause IBS problems to continue or even grow worse.

Whether or not you can completely recover from your IBS symptoms is hotly debated, but either way, controlling the syndrome should be your first step.

Where do you start?

With your diet.  Understanding which foods trigger your IBS is essential to controlling the syndrome. Move toward a healthier diet and keep track of the foods you eat and those occasions when you encounter new IBS episodes. As you ween yourself from those foods that tend to cause trouble, your digestive tract should become stronger and healthier.  Over time, you may be able to add certain foods back into your diet, as long as you use caution and keep good records of the results.

The next important step toward digestive health is to keep your body in good shape. By staying physically active and maintaining strong muscles, the muscles in the intestine and digestive areas will benefit, allowing foods to be processed easier.

Next, since IBS is believed to be primarily related to nerves, seek out ways to relax and control the stress in your life. This may include such activities as yoga or meditation, or just taking time each day to sit quietly and enjoy the environment around you.

If you’re taking medications for your IBS, it’s important to understand that these should be a temporary aid that you eventually ween yourself from once your digestive system is re-balanced and functioning without irritation.  While medications can help you control your digestive system for a period of time, you don’t want to depend on them over the long run.

With the right steps, you can completely recover from irritable bowel syndrome.
