Alternative Medicine High Blood Pressure

I apologize for the awkward title – alternative medicine high blood pressure – but sometimes we have to twist titles around in order to make them easier for readers to find. With that aside, let’s get to the meat of the topic. While there are plenty of prescription drugs to help control high blood pressure, many people either can’t afford the medications or don’t want to deal with the accompanying side-effects. These are the most often sited reasons for turning to alternative medicines. Before we talk about some of your options, let’s make sure you understand blood pressure ranges. You might be surprised to know that they aren’t necessarily the same for everyone. Age, race, health and gender can all influence a healthy blood pressure reading. In general terms, however, a healthy person should … Read entire article »

High Blood Pressure – The Basics of Hypertension

Because it can damage your heart, kidneys, and brain, even though you feel no symptoms, high blood pressure is often referred to as “the silent killer.” Blood pressure is the force exerted on the walls of your arteries by the blood circulating through your system. Your blood pressure is at its highest when the heart beats. This is called systolic pressure. When the heart is at rest, between beats, your blood pressure falls. This is the diastolic pressure. The cause of high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is relatively unknown. In fact, in 90 to 95 percent of the cases, doctors have no idea of the underlying cause. In the remaining cases, the disease can be traced to specific causes: heredity, kidney abnormalities, adrenal gland tumors, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, hormone … Read entire article »

Is There a Link? Coffee and Hypertension

If I have one vice in my otherwise healthy lifestyle, it’s my large cup of great coffee, everyday. Not one for wanting to own “vices,” I am curious as to why coffee, in moderation, is considered to be one. A good friend recently stated that her doctor had told her she had to quit drinking coffee due to her hypertension (high blood pressure). Watch out? My friend was telling me this quite literally, as she was exhaling cigarette smoke. Did her doctor mention that this behavior is far more than a contributor to high blood pressure. I had to assume the doctor stressed to my friend that smoking, alcohol and being overweight are all high contributors to her increased blood pressure, as there is considerable evidence that these things do … Read entire article »

Why You Need to Keep a Blood Pressure Log

One good way to keep track of your blood pressure if you have high blood pressure is to keep a log of your blood pressure levels. A log can help you determine which foods and activities may make it go up or down. People don’t have the same body. Some things that cause your blood pressure to rise won’t cause someone else’s too. You might be able to eat certain foods that other people cannot. It is important to know which foods these things are and which activities are best for you and your blood pressure. Blood Pressure Tips

Tip 1: Getting a regular blood pressure check could well save your life. high blood pressure can be a silent killer in that it can cause other problems such as kidney failure, heart attacks and strokes – sometimes without warning and with fatal results. Tip 2: Getting used to eating food that contains less salt might be difficult at first but if you consistently stick to a lower salt intake, over time you should find that you actually quite like your food with less salt. Tip 3: Use a salt substitute. There are several available on the market. They contain less sodium chloride and are more potassium-rich. Sea salt, rock salt and natural salt are still sodium chloride so are not salt substitutes. Tip 4: Exercise, such as aerobic exercise, that makes a … Read entire article »

Exercise And High Blood Pressure

A healthy exercise program is based on the principle that every work out asks a little more of your body. For example, let’s say you take up swimming and the first time out you’re able to do a single lap before your body becomes overworked. Through persistence, you’ll gradually discover that a single lap no longer stresses your body and you’re capable of swimming further and further. Eventually, your strength and endurance will improve to such a degree that you’re able to many laps without encountering any fatigue or stress. This principle applies to any form of exercise you choose to undertake. Here’s how it affects your blood pressure: extra blood is extracted from the muscles of the body as you exercise. These muscles become very adept at extracting the available oxygen, … Read entire article »
