Diuretics and Depression
The use of diuretics to lose weight can lead to numerous additional problems. Diuretics have always been a favorite among women, teens and athletes. However, many people who choose to use diuretics become obsessed with them in an effort to quickly lose weight. More recently, we’re discovering that chronic depression can be an underlying cause of the use and the abuse of diuretics.
Most people who choose to take diuretics certainly don’t start out with an intent of the forming an addiction to them. Most people don’t even know that the use of diuretics can lead to serious health problems and can even be life threatening. However, this is just another example of a the use of a substance in order to cover up the underlying pain associated with chronic depression.
The primary purpose of diuretics is to relieve fluid retention, but they can cause potassium loss as well as the loss of other nutrition benefits. People can become dependent on the drug before they even realize it. Chronically depressed individuals have always been at high risk for dependence on weight loss medications, diuretics and steroids. These are all substances which can serve to physically change a person who’s looking to relieve mental pressures.
