Symptoms of Cervical Cancer

Whenever a virus or disease is detected in someone you know, one of the first questions you may ask is, “What are the symptoms?” This is a common question for the human papillomavirus (HPV) as well. Now, there are all types of HPV, many of which can cause Pap Test abnormalities, however only in rare cases does HPV lead to the development of cervical cancer.

Unfortunately, there are very few clues that a woman has HPV. There may be an appearance of genital warts. These will be flesh colored and soft, sometimes resembling the shape of a cauliflower. They are painless, so you may not even be aware of their presence. Anytime you feel or see anything out of the ordinary – a skin growth, lesion, raised area, no matter the color; you should notify your doctor immediately.

It’s possible for genital warts to be detected by the physical examination that accompanies a Pap Test Screening, or even during a normal physical exam of the genital region.

The Pap Smear Test is not designed to detect HPV or cervical cancer. It only detects abnormal cervical cells, that indicate the need for further testing. Abnormal cells may indicate a vaginal infection, or it could be HPV. Cervical dysplasia, does not indicate cervical cancer.
