Vitamin B12 Information

Vitamin B12, which contains cobalt (sometimes referred to as cobalamin), is an essential vitamin. Its primary function is the generation of healthy red blood cells, though all of the cells in the body require Vitamin B12, including white blood cells and nerve cells.

While Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin, and most such vitamins cannot be stored, B12 is an exception. In fact, the liver can store B12 for years. This helps to reduce the odds of a deficiency. On those rare occasions when the body does experience a B12 deficiency, the result can lead to anemia. Common symptoms are extreme exhaustion, lack of energy, easily losing your breath, and the body’s struggle to fight infection.

Realizing the importance of the role of Vitamin B12 within your body, you may be surprised to know that the actual recommended daily requirement is quite small, less than 2 mg. In fact, most of us consume much more than we require. The primary sources of dietary Vitamin B12 are from meat, dairy products and eggs. It is not normally found in vegetables or plant foods.
